Difference between Good and Great - The Importance of Leading your Staff, Would you like “good” or “great”?

Of course you want “GREAT”! Who wants to be “good” when they can be “GREAT”! But so many offices feel they are only “good” and are just getting by with the staff, building, patients, money they make, on and on. The difference between good and GREAT is actually right on the tip of your tongue and in ever thought you have. Its not in hiring better staff or getting a better location. The answer to a GREAT life and GREAT practice is in how you think and speak. It is that simple!

The problem is that not everyone “thinks” that way. Most people think of objections or limitations first when they think about what they want. This is exactly why most people on your payroll need training or should I say re-training. They need to be continually plugged into positive encouraging messages on a daily basis for months at a time to actually change. And the tough part of this is that some people actually don’t want to change and will take your “ship” down in the process. The tough part of the owner is knowing who needs to go and who needs more training. The only way to find out those answers is by live face-to-face training on a weekly schedule. You will quickly discover who is on your team and who needs to go.

Just think how motivated you are after attending a great seminar. You leave with so many ideas and are committed to change your life for the better. Only to go back to the office and get crushed by the never ending cycles of staff issues, paperwork, and so on. Its all to easy to fall back into the same rut of existence. These are the practices and practitioners who just cant get it together and stress over all aspects of life. These providers cannot get what they want and continue to exist.

Some of you are saying well I’m glad that’s not me. Well I am here to tell you that it is all of us to some degree. The difference between the average practice and the exceptional practice is typically not how hard they work but how excited and motivated they are to do their job.

I want you to thrive versus survive and we can do that with 4 Steps:

  • Think in superlatives – (We are going to win, This is awesome, I have an unbelievable opportunity, etc)
  • Speak in superlatives – You are amazing, we are Great, etc.
  • Set Goals.
  • TRAIN to reach those goals.

It is easy to get motivated at a seminar, but what you do daily will determine if you stay motivated. You are the leader of your army and your staff members need to be willing to run through walls for you.

Great staff are not hired, but rather trained. You must spend time with your troops to build the vision of the future and arm them with the skills needed. Once you train a staff member to do their job the difference between whether they are good or great comes down to more training not time on the job.

Most of the offices and owners we talk with have a “good” practice. They say things like we are doing “good” but want to do better. My staff is “good” but I wish they would do more. Its an old story that keeps repeating and “Groundhog day” for some practices who just cant get it together. A good practice continues to be good and gets by. The owner has sleepless nights and stresses over every payroll. No one can do it right so I will just do it myself.

I promise you that if you visualize your ideal practice and life, write down the goals and train your team on a weekly basis in their job you will get to your Great!
